I found out about it through my school’s careers advisor service. Does your school have one of these? There should be some information (if you dig deep enough!) on Medical Physics as a career. I then did a lot of internet research and arranged to spend the day with a medical physicist at a nearby hospital. People are always willing to help if you show an interest.
I found out about when I worked at a hospital in Sweden, the job is very similar in most countries. I decided it was what I wanted to do because I liked what those guys did every day. As Leila mentioned, theres lots and lots of information online and even a very structured training program to get you from the start to the end.
I cheated a bit and knew about medical physics because my older brother did it too! But if you ask at your school they should be able to give you more information. Also, the institute or physics nad engineering has a lot of info on it http://www.ipem.ac.uk/CareersTraining/MedicalPhysicists.aspx
I found about it in the last year of my undergraduate studies. I was always interested in diagnostic radiology and so started working in that direction and finally chose my career stream as medical physics.
