We send electrical signals up and down the spinal cord so that we can tell if it has been squashed or not. When a surgeon corrects an abnormal curve in the spine, they literally pull, twist and bend it back into the right shape and then fix it there with titanium rods. The spinal cord runs down the centre of the spine and so when it is being moved about, the cord can become pinched. If this happens, the signals that we are sending up and down the spine will get smaller and so we can tell the surgeon. They can then change the position of the spine again so that the cord is not pinched.
