I was good at science in school, and I thought I’d stay with it for University. I especially like engineering and technology too, so Physics seemed like the best option. I also liked medicine, so I decided to study Medical Physics after that.

The thing that attracted me to physics was that not everyone can do it, I like a challenge. I think there’s still a certain stigma attached to being a scientist or a physicist and I wanted to break the mould. If you can do physics, it’s a highly attractive attribute to employers as it gives you excellent numeracy, logic, problem solving skills, and if you can get the communication skills nailed then you’re on to a winner, however you wish to apply it.

I found out about medical physics as a career and really liked the medical application of science but in particular that it was a highly specialised niche field.

I liked the fact that when I was at university, people could say “Well, it’s not rocket science” and I could reply with… “Actually, it is”

I don’t think that I ever thought, “When I grow up I want to be a scientist”. It was more that at each time I had to choose options, like GCSEs, A-levels, my degree, I just ended up picking science over anything else. Even when I was doing my degree I still didn’t know what I wanted to do as a job…it was just an opportunity that came along that I liked the look of. I guess what i’m saying is don’t worry if you don’t know what you want to do right now – just keep picking subjects that you enjoy and see where it leads you.

When I was small I loved to ask the question “why” for almost everything I observed or perceived. I was intrigued by how things worked so I got deeper into science.

Then when I grew old I thought I am done asking more questions and waiting for people to answer them/find an answer to, so I decided I should work on my own to find the answers I seek. As I got into physics deeper and deeper I felt like finding these answer more and more; I am now too deep and referred to as a scientist….. lol…

Anyways for myself, all I am trying to do is find the answers to the questions I have which others cannot answer.

I was always very interested in computers so I wanted to find out how these things work. I wanted to know everything about them so I became a computer scientist. When I was woking in Afrika to help build a hospital I realised that there are many devices which are quite difficult to use so I decided I wanted to change that.
