I’ve had three operations; I broke my arm when I was four years old and I had to have an operation to put it back together again. I got glandular fever when I was sixteen, so I had an operation to take my tonsils out six months later. I then had a third operation to take my wisdom teeth out when I was seventeen. So i guess I have lots of experience in theatres, both as a patient and as a member of staff!
I had an ear operation when I was 13, I had to stay in overnight. I had a wisdom tooth out in hospital a few years ago, far better experience than having it out in the dentist’s chair!
I had an operation for an ingrown toenail when I was young. They tried to fix it once by local anaesthetic but that didn’t work so I had to go back and have it done under general anaesthetic. Haven;t had any problems since though.
I have attended a LOT of operations during my training and routinely at work though, from orthopaedic surgery with lots of hammering of bones, to surgery performed by robots, to prostate brachytherapy where we insert permanent radioactive seeds. Never a dull day!
