I won the Hamilton Prize for Research, the Rosse medal for research, an Advanced scholars fund and also a 4 year scholarship to study for a doctorate, after I finished University. We also apply for grants from the Government, basically to get them to give us money to research more drugs!

Yes, over the years I have won awards for my work: A have won prizes for posters that I have made, talks that I have given and even a prize for writing an essay! I have also been given a number of travel awards that have helped me to attend and present at conferences in Glasgow, Denver in the USA and even Cairns in Australia.

I won prizes for distinction at high school and the Davidson Award for academic excellence two years in a row at university. In my career I have won awards for presentations, I won a bursary from the European Federation of Organisations in Medical Physics to attend a course in Geneva (and visit CERN), as well as a bursary from the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine to present at a conference in Sydney where my abstract had been accepted.

However, I highly doubt I would be where I am now if i hadn’t won the prize for best fancy dress at a university charity event called Stranded (where we were blindfolded and abandoned at an anonymous location in the UK and had to make our way back to Edinburgh with no money, doing challenges along the way). My team costume was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (I was Michelangelo) – I was up til 4am perfecting the loo-roll nun-chucks and washing basin shells! I put this on my CV when I applied for jobs in Medical Physics(yes really!) and it made me stand out 🙂
