I think it is a thing that depends on person to person. I know people who have been smoking their entire life and still have not got cancer. Also, I knew someone who never smoke but still died of lung cancer. so there are always going to be best estimates as to what can cause cancer rather than a specific thing that always causes cancer.
There are a few definite causes, we call these “carcinogens”, smoking cigarettes is one of them, others are certain virus (like human papilloma virus) and fungus (some grow on mushrooms). Carcinogens are known to give you cancer but affect everybody slightly differently. Some other times there is no known cause for it, and this is what we would like to find at some stage
