Hi Owlie, I started my career in Medical Physics straight after finishing university (with a bit of travelling in between), so I wasn’t really in a “career” before. At university though and through school I had many many part time jobs – cafes, cleaning, art galleries, bars, working at music festivals, highland shows, but my favourite was being a front of house manager at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which I did 3 years in row, it was great fun and I got to meet a lot of great people, and also led me to work at the Prague Fringe Festival! Before I applied to Medical Physics I did arrange to visit a few departments to see what it was like. If possible it’s always great to get some work experience in whichever area you want to work in. You should find that if you’re genuinely interested then people are normally more than happy to help!

Hi Owlie, I was woking for the UN on a special project in Africa. We created a Hospital in Cameroon and I was responsible for all the technical medical devices. I put them all together and created the network. Sometimes travelled to other hospitals and repaired their damaged devices or translated manuals.
I was also teaching the staff how to use them and I brought a free hospital management system that a former Professor of mine and some other people developed with me for all hospitals. It was an amazing time and what made me so happy was that I could also give courses for all other people who want to know how to use computers for accounting etc. or just generally how computers work to get better jobs or to even just get a job in general.
During that time I discovered that many people struggles and made lots of errors with medical devices – that was when I thought I want to change that – so I ended up doing my PhD in that area now and I already found some cool new ways to prevent people of making errors ! Wohoo! 🙂
